Dental Anxiety Management
Although most patients can tolerate treatment with local anesthesia, we understand that some may feel anxious, gag easily, or experience claustrophobia. To alleviate these concerns, we offer a range of anxiolytics.
NITROUS OXIDE
One such option is nitrous oxide (also known as “laughing gas”), a mild sedative/analgesic that leaves your system completely before you leave the dental chair. This means you won't need to arrange for transportation, as you'll be able to drive home. Nitrous oxide has been shown to improve the efficacy of local anesthesia and generally reduce discomfort during your visit. Because patient comfort is a top priority, Dr. Ball recommends nitrous oxide for all patients who can safely have it. Nitrous oxide is contraindicated in patients who are pregnant, have a vitamin B12 deficiency, acute respiratory infections, severe emphysematous blebs, inner ear or eye surgery within the last two weeks, or bowel obstruction.
ORAL SEDATION
For patients who need an even greater level of comfort, we offer minimal oral sedation. This option can be used in conjunction with nitrous oxide if needed. With minimal oral sedation, patients take an oral medication that helps them feel calm, relaxed, and able tolerate treatment with greater ease. We do ask that patients undergoing minimal oral sedation have a driver bring them to and from their appointment. If you have any questions or would like more information about your sedation options, please let us know when scheduling your appointment so that our office can make the necessary arrangements prior to your arrival
